How do I get an SR22 in Oregon?
First, be sure you need an SR-22. Usually, you need an
insurance policy with SR22 in Oregon because somewhere
along the way you have been convicted of driving with no
insurance, had an accident (at-fault or not) involving no
insurance, been convicted of a major infraction like DUI,
or had your car randomly selected from the DMV database as
not having insurance. Do any of these apply?
Then, give Pulse Insurance a call at 503-489-3143. The
agents at Pulse Insurance can help you determine if you
need an SR22 certificate. You can also email Pulse Insurance
if you have additional questions about needing an SR22
certificate that are no answered here. Ultimately, it is
the DMV that can confirm whether you need one or not. You
can call them at 503-299-9999 at their Portland, Oregon,
local call number. Have your driver license or identification
card number ready when you call.
Filing an SR22 can be done two ways - you can get an SR-22
from an insurance agent and hand deliver it to the DMV, or
you can have one sent by the insurance company. Either way
you must have a minimum of state required insurance limits.
SR22's are not stand alone, and you can't get one without
insurance that is in force and current. That is precisely
what an SR-22 is, proof that you have at least the basic
insurance coverage from a company in the State of Oregon.
It is not a special type of auto insurance. You are buying
the same car insurance coverage everyone else.
Are you in a hurry to get an SR-22 certificate? Then it
would be best to buy your policy from a local agent; one
where you can go to his or her office, buy the car insurance
and walk out with a the SR22 in hand.
If you are not in a hurry, then you have more options. You
can select a car insurance policy from any company, independent,
exclusive or direct, that is willing to print and send the
certificate electronically or through the mail to the Oregon
DMV. The important factor to consider here is that waiting
on the insurance company to file your SR22 may take as long
as 10 days. If you need or want one sooner, you will need
to do some research.
So now what? You have options for getting an SR22 in Oregon.
Will you choose an independent agent who represents several
companies, an agent who represents only one company (exclusive),
or a direct writing insurance company (one company you contact
directly either by phone or online)? Independent and exclusive
agents usually have an office where you can stop by, purchase
the auto insurance and leave with the certificate. Direct
companies, like Esurance ®, Progressive Direct ® and
Geico ®, usually do not.
If you choose/have an independent agent, you have options:
- Call the agent and ask for an SR22 to be filed if you
already have insurance through his or her office.
- If you don't have insurance, get a quote and make a
decision to purchase. You will have two options here
too with an independent agent -
- Purchase a policy through your agent via the web/email.
You must have a valid email account to use this option.
This also requires you to wait for the SR22 to be filed
with the DMV by the insurance company. The agent can help
expedite the process by giving the insurance instructions
to file the certificate as soon as possible.
- Go into your agent's office to purchase the insurance.
This option allows the agent to print and provide you with
an SR22 instantly. We can do this in our office; you will
walk out with an SR-22 in your hand. Make sure you ask
your agent, before you buy, if he can provide you with this
service.
If you choose/have a captive agent:
- Call the agent and ask for an SR22 to be filed if you
already have insurance through his office. Some captive
agents will not file SR22s or can only provide them under
limited circumstances or for a short period of time. Many
will require the SR22 to be filed by the insurance company
and will not be able to give you one to take to the DMV.
Make sure you ask questions.
- If you don't have insurance, get a quote. Go into
your agent's office to purchase the insurance. Ask if
your agent can print and provide you with an SR22 instantly.
If not, you will have to wait for it to be filed by the
insurance company.
If you choose a direct policy (no agent):
- Call the insurance company and ask for an SR22 to be
filed if you already have insurance.
- If you don't have insurance, get a quote and make a
decision to purchase. You generally only have one option
here too. Purchase a policy via the web. This also requires
you to wait for the SR22 to be filed with the DMV by the
insurance company.
- Either way, you will find that the direct insurance
company doesn't have a local office where you can go and
pick up the certificate. Don't be fooled by thinking a
faxed or emailed certificate will be valid. Most DMV
personnel will not accept a faxed or emailed copy. They
look for the SR22 certificate to say "original" and have
an original agent signature.
